History

The event was established in 1982, and it was initially called the Grand Prix des Provinces. The first three editions were held at Bordeaux le Bouscat

. Its distance was originally set at 2,000 metres, and it attained Group 3 status in 1984.

The race was given its present title in 1986. This was in memory of André Baboin, a chairman of the Société des Courses de Lyon and a committee member of the Société d'Encouragement, who died the previous year.

The distance of the race was extended to 2,200 metres in 1987, and it was restored to 2,000 metres in 1993. The original sequence of venues — Bordeaux, Lyon and Marseille — was repeated until 2000.

The event was staged at Toulouse
