Son of John Newlove, who played in three Challenge Cup
finals at Wembley, two for Featherstone Rovers
(in 1972–73 and 1973–74, and one for Hull (in 1979–80), Paul Newlove began his career at Featherstone in 1988 before moving on to play for Bradford Northern

The transfer of Paul Newlove to St. Helens from the Bradford Bulls is still one of the most expensive rugby league transfers.
