The event is named after Ormonde, a successful racehorse foaled at Eaton Hall, Cheshire, in 1883. The original Ormonde Stakes was contested by two-year-olds over 5 furlongs. The present version, initially a race for horses aged three or older, was established in 1936.

During the period 1955 to 1957, the Ormonde Stakes was restricted to three-year-olds and run over 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 10 yards.

The race is now confined to older horses, and it sometimes serves as a trial for the Coronation Cup
