. The club was formed in 1936. The name was not, as may be thought, derived directly from the Norse god Tyr. One of the founding members, Anders Forsell, was inspired by a Canadian book featuring a bear called Tyr. A bear is a prominent feature of the club's logotype to this day.

At the end of the 1980s and for most of the 1990s OK Tyr was also one of the most successful orienteering

The club house, Tyrstugan, is situated 5 km to the north of Karlstad, with access to forest and sawdust trails for training. In addition Tyr has around 30 maps available in the vicinity of Karlstad for training and competitions.

Tyr organizes annual races Propagandan, Minifemdagars and Lången och Korten. Training races, V65, are held weekly during the orienteering
