Nouvelle is a municipality

of 1755 and a few settlers from Jersey fleeing the American revolution and some Irish. The name Nouvelle (new) was used as early as the end of the 18th century and stood for the "new land" being made available West of town now called Carleton-sur-Mer
. It first appeared on documents in 1787, by a Jersey business man Charles Robin, and Abbé Joseph Mathurin Bourg, the first Acadian priest.
From 1845 to 1861, it was named Shoolbred (in various forms and years).
On July 1, 1869, it was proclaimed "paroisse de saint-jean-l'évangéliste". This date was the reference date for the centennial celebrations held in 1969.
In 1909, the Western portion of this territory split and was called "Municipalité d'Escuminac" and
in 1912, the Eastern portion of the territory was known as "Municipalité de Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste", and then on December 5, 1953 changed to "Municipalité de Nouvelle".
