 has been approximately split in half forming the two suburbs. The suburb is mostly made up of newly developed housing.

The origin of the suburb name is from the name given to the estate development.

The suburb includes an abundance of parklands, schools and shops and currently houses 10,000 people, with 25,000 projected by the end of the development. There are also many new facilities in the area, including the North Lakes Community Centre and the recently extended Westfield North Lakes

 and was meant to include a cinema complex by 2008, although construction has not yet started.

North Lakes Business Park started construction in 2007 and is planned to take 7 years to fully complete. It will ultimately create 5,000 jobs, cover 55 hectares and cost $130 million. Construction of a walk-over bridge crossing the Bruce Highway and leading onto a path/corridor that heads to the Dakabin railway station is also planned in the future; the walk/ride will be approximately 2.5 km.

, has two campuses. The Year 11-12 campus is known as the "Urban Learning Centre", and is located beside the Pathways centre in the Town centre. The $12 million project was completed December 2007. This is due to be extended to accommodate the unexpected large number of students, in the next 12 months.

The suburb has a State College, which serves Prep to Year 12 students, and a Private College, which will serve Prep to Year 7, starting in 2008.
