Mushkin was named after founder William Michael Mushkin's family name when the company was founded in 1994.

Although some people pronounce Mushkin /ˈmʌʃkɪn/ "mush-kin", the proper pronunciation is ˈmʊʃkɪn "moosh-kin" (rhymes with "push").

On December 8, 2008, Mushkin relocated its headquarters to Inverness, the suburban tech center south of Denver in Englewood, Colorado. Prompting the move to the new facility was the need for more space and a building more suited to accommodate the nature of Mushkin's business which includes light manufacturing, assembly, R&D and component testing. The new facility offers 50% more production space, 30% more room for testing operations and R&D, and a 40% increase in office space. Mushkin's new address is 317 Inverness Way South, Ste 130, Englewood Co. 80112. Its phone numbers and other contact information remain the same.

On May 11, 2000, Ramtron International Corporation along with its subsidiary, Enhanced Memory Systems, announced an agreement to acquire by way of a merger Mushkin Inc.

 Corporation along with its subsidiary, Enhanced Memory Systems, Inc., announced that Ramtron acquired, by way of a merger, Mushkin Inc. The merger resulted in Mushkin becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Ramtron. But in July 2005, George Stathakis, who was the general manager, purchased the company from Ramtron International and became Mushkin's new owner and president.

In 2005, the company released a new heatsink design for RAM that provided a 58% increase in surface area and allowed for increased airflow, greatly increasing heat dissipation.
