Birnbaum was the second son of the Jewish philosopher Nathan Birnbaum

 and his wife Rosa Korngut. Birnbaum later married Ernestine (Tina) Esther Helfmann, with whom he had two children: Rafael Zwi and Hana. Birnbaum lived in Berlin
