. Upon her return to the United States, she was appointed Director of the Office of Russian Affairs at the State Department. She held the position until August 2007, when she was appointed Special Assistant to President George W. Bush

In 2008, Warlick left National Security Council, transferring to U.S. Department of Defense, where she worked as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Policy. She left Department of Defense in May 2009.

On September 24, 2009, she was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Serbia by President Obama. On December 24, 2009 Warlick's appointment to Belgrade was confirmed by the Senate. She's married to James B. Warlick, Jr.
