. Cruz became parochial vicar of Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Newark, New Jersey
in 1982, and a member of the Archdiocesan
Vocations
Committee in 1986.
In 1995, he was made a chaplain
at Saint Michael's Medical Center and later was named director of the archdiocesan Office of Pastoral Care in 2003. He was raised to the rank of Honorary Chaplain of His Holiness
in 2000, and also served as vice president
of the Mission and Ministry for Catholic Health and Human Services, the health care
and social services
