 family. The nominate subspecies is a relatively large cichlid at up to 41 centimetres (16.1 in) in length and about 1.6 kilograms (3.5 lb) in weight, but its remaining subspecies are not known to surpass 13–16 cm (5.1–6.3 in) in length.

The widespread nominate subspecies is found in lakes, rivers and other fresh or brackish habitats in northern and central Africa
