History

Route 86 was created in 1936. The core route has always been between Stratford and Romford. Originally, 2 buses per hour (4 on Wednesdays) were numbered 86A, which ran between Stratford and Romford, and then running to Upminster

 via the present-day route 248. The main 86 ran to Gidea Park

, and the 86A diverted to Limehouse, meaning the 86A now had a much more prominent role, serving new housing estates in the Hornchurch

Around 1960, route 86 was withdrawn, and replaced between Romford and Brentwood by route 287. The 86A was renumbered 86, but remained the same, running between Limehouse and Upminster. In the early 1980s, the section between Limehouse and Stratford was withdrawn and replaced with route 225 (which was later replaced by the 278, then abandoned in 1993). At the same time, the section between Romford and Upminster was replaced by an extension of the upgraded route 248, previously a local route in Upminster.

Today, route 86 still runs between Stratford and Romford. The night service is covered by the N86, which runs between Stratford and Romford via the same route, then continues to Harold Hill
