There have been three iterations of route 299. The original route was a night bus

A new route 299 was established in January 1970 running from Southgate Station via Cockfosters

 in September 1980, leading to route 299 once again disappearing. Incidentally the current route 298 is almost identical to the route 299 of the 1970s.

Today's route 299 was introduced in 1992, replacing part of the old W9 route from Muswell Hill via Powys Lane in Palmers Green to Southgate Station. From Southgate Station, the route then ran along Chase Side and Reservoir Road, and onwards to Cockfosters Station. The 1992 route was initially operated by Capital Citybus

 Metrorider vehicles and the timetable was not changed for some nine years, until February 2001. At this point, the vehicles were replaced by low floor Dart buses.
