 was formed in 1980, he was appointed as a Secretary. Throughout the years, he held offices as a national General Secretary, Vice-President or "in-charge" of a particular state. On April 14, 1998 Thakre was elected as President of the Bharatiya Janata Party

. In August 2000, he stepped down from this post. He died December 28, 2003 at the age of 81.

Shri Kushabhau Thakre has been worshiped as a true “NishkamKarmYogi” (A selfless man who is devoted to his work honestly without caring for the fruits) in India’s political and Social scenario. Shri thakre is the true representetive of the Culture, Values and Ideas which have been connived in age old Saint tradition (Rishi parampara). Kushabhau’s greatest quality was to inspire leadership and develop dedicated team of devoted worker. He always preferred to remain in the background and motivate others perform in the fore front. His selfless attitude and honest dedication for building up the society was the motivational force for establishing this Journalism and Mass Communication University in his name.

He always fought for the interest of the common man. People belonging to different political parties, following different ideologies admired his honesty, simplicity, dedication and devotion. Kushabhau used to say “Education should not be confined to livelihood only but it should also be instrumental in building up the sences of responsibility in an Indian Citizen.

Shri. Kushabhau Thakre was born on August 15, 1922 in Dhar (Madhya Pradesh). He was educated at Dhar and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. His father was Late Dr. Sundar Rao Shripati Rao Thakre and his mother was late Smt. Shantabhai Sundar Rao Thakre.

Shri. Kushabhau Thakre was associated with the RSS since 1942. He became Pracharak in 1942 at Neemunch (M.P.) and then moved to the Ratlam Division(Ratlam, Ujjain, Mandsaur, Jhabua, Chittaur, Kota, Bundi, Jhalawad, Banswada(Raj.), Dahod (Gujarat)).

In 1956 he became Secretary (Organisation) Madhya Pradesh of Bhartiya Jansangh.

In 1967 he was appointed All India Secretary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Orissa and also additional in charge of Gujarat.

In 1974 he was made All India Secretary (Organisation).

He was jailed for 19 months during Emergency period. In 1977 he was made the president of Madhya Pradesh Janta Party.

In 1979 he was elected to Lok Sabha in a bye-election from Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh.

In 1980 he was appointed All India Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party and in charge of Gujarat, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. Remained on this post until 1984.

Since then he held many important positions and finally became president of the Bhartiya Janta Party in 1998 until 2000. A true visionary and an efficient team builder Shri Thakre has major contribution in building the organisation in Chhattisgarh. Leaders groomed by Shri Thakre hold important positions in the state Government.
