History

Kaimai was established in the 1978 redistribution incorporating parts of the previous Tauranga and Bay of Plenty electorates.

National's Bruce Townshend held the seat from its creation in 1978 to his death a few months before the 1987 general election.

He was replaced by Robert Anderson who served from 1987 to 1996.

As a result of MMP redistricting, the Kaimai electorate was split between the Tauranga, Bay of Plenty and Coromandel electorates.
