Etymology

The name Kadiri is a vernacular name for the Sanskrit word, Khadri, meaning Canary wood or Indian Mulberry (Morinda Citrifolia). Legend has it that the Lord Sri Khadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy has emerged out of this tree in this place and hence the name.

Geography

Kadiri is located at . It has an average elevation of 504 metres (1653 ft). The temple of popular writer Sri Yogi Vemana is at Katarupalle 15 kilometers from this town. The town is known for its religious tolerance. There is a CHANDRAVADANA MOHIYAR TOMB near Govt. Hospital at muslim burial grounds. The love affair of chandravadana and mohiyar is fantastic. The tomb is famous till today, as so many couple use the kumkum and other materials taken from the tomb to adore on the belief that they do not get disjoint.

Kadiri is known for Drought victim area. The migration of people from here to other cities like Banglore, Tirupathi, Hyderabad, is very common. The flesh business is rampant. We can see so many tea stalls in every inch of the town which signifies its bad economic condition of the people. However there are certain rich people who are sucking the blood of the poor.

Kadiri has an average literacy rate of 57%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy is 46%. In Kadiri, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. Kadiri is one of the few towns in Andhra Pradesh with a large Muslim population of 55% of the town.

Economy

Kadiri was comparatively rich region in Anantapur district till recently in the agriculture sector. Kadiri variety of groundnut is quite famous for its yield. Main crops in this region are groundnut and sunflower.

Politics

Kadiri was a biggest revenue division (taluks) before formation of mandals (taluks were subdivided into mandals as part of admistrative reforms carried out in 1980s). Kadiri was represented in state assembly by famous K.V.Vema reddy garu in 1960s and 70s. He also served as speaker for the state assembly.

Festivals

A famous event carried out every year is the Rathothsavam (Car Festival), on this holy day, a huge Rath (Chariot) with the Lord Lakshmi Narasimha's idol on it is pulled by hundreds of devotees are watched by thousands of people.thousands of peoples are arriving from almost 35 villages.

Ramadan Festival is also celebrated grandly as the major population of Kadiri Mucipality belongs to Muslim minority community.
