It has an area of 2531.73 km² and a population of 480,000.
It is located central of Jiangxi (central east of Ji'an city),196 km south of Nanchang
(Capital of Jiangxi province), 23 km north from Ji'an
. The local speech is a variety of Gan Chinese.
The government of Jishui is located in Wenfeng town (文峰镇).

A important development is the building of the Jishui Gan River Bridge (吉水赣江大桥), which connects the East (水东) and West (水西) of the Gan River. The bridge is 1057 meter long and 15 meter wide. The project started in 2001 and was completed in 2004. The total investment was 117 million RMB.
The Jishui Gan River Bridge was built to connect the 105 National Highway and Guanyue Expressway, and it also ends the history of ferrying between the East and West.

A important development is the building of the Jishui Gan River Bridge (吉水赣江大桥), which connects the East (水东) and West (水西) of the Gan River. The bridge is 1057 meter long and 15 meter wide. The project started in 2001 and was completed in 2004. The total investment was 117 million RMB.
