Introduction

Each new era and society demands a new breed of professionals. Just as the industrial age heralded management sciences, the information age is engendering the domain of information sciences. With this belief and the concept of an institution focusing exclusively on information studies and research in India, ISiM was established. ISiM was conceptualized and established in 2005, by the University of Mysore, with seed grants from the Ford Foundation and Bangalore based Informatics India Pvt. Ltd., and in partnership with some of the leading information schools in the U.S, namely the School of Information at the University of Michigan, the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, and the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. To strengthen its academic linkages, ISiM signed memorandum of understanding with School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, USA, University of Michigan, USA and Dalhousie University of Canada in 2006.

Being a new age school for the knowledge economy, ISiM also defines a new educational model – Inverse of Distance Learning

Graduation Day 2011

ISiM celebrated its Graduation Day on Monday, the 11th of April, 2011. In her Welcome Address, Prof. Shalini Urs, Executive Director of ISiM, drew attention to the objective and tradition of celebrating graduation days. She said, a graduation day is an academic cultural tradition and is a rite of passage essentially symbolizing “Inculcation, transformation” and “Return to Society in a changed status.” The purpose of ISiM Graduation Day Celebrations program is to build a sense of new roles as ISiMians and solidarity.

Dr. P. Anandan, Managing Director, Microsoft Research India, Bangalore, giving the commencement speech, outlined various kinds of aspirations that we, Indians, have seen over the ages, taking examples from Indian PURANAS and history. He said the only reason why we keep innovating, is that we don't stop aspiring. He stressed upon the fact that we should always aspire towards reaching greater heights, and work hard towards achieving them. He gave the Ten Commandments for Success that included: being brave; believe in “no boundaries’; failures as learning opportunities; not being limited by success.

Also speaking on the occasion was the chief guest for the ceremony, Shri M. N. Vidyashankar, IAS, Principal Secretary, e-Governance, IT, BT and ST, Government of Karnataka. He underscored the importance of innovation and said that is the only way for organizations to compete in the current global scenario. He also said that one of the main hurdles in the path of constant innovation was the non-acceptance of technology by members of the general public. Shri Vidyashankar highlighted with an example each for the success of using technology at their department and for the failure of an innovative education system due to the non-acceptance of technology. He also threw light on the fact that though Indians have significantly contributed to the research and innovation successes at Silicon Valley (California), they have not played such a major role in research activities in the Indus Valley (India), and advised the students to work towards a career of innovation.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, Prof. V. G. Talawar, in his presidential address stressed on the three Ds: Desire; Determination; Dedication.

The dignitaries distributed the degree certificates to the graduates. On the occasion, two graduates, Mr. Nabhajit Ray (M.Tech Class of 2009) and Mr. Nikesh N (M.Tech Class of 2010), were awarded the "Parvathamma Subbaraya Gold Medal", instituted with munificent grants from Dr. Chudamani, an alumnus of the University of Mysore and currently, the Deputy Librarian at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
