David Hornik writes in the FrontPage Magazine: "Rosenthal lacks exactly what she ought to have: a clear, reality-attuned grasp of the actual, grim situation of Jew-and Israel-hatred in today’s world." Her comments were also criticized by Gregg Rickman, the previous Anti-Semitism Special Envoy. He writes: "If Ms. Rosenthal cannot figure out the borders and limits of her portfolio, perhaps then she should seek another position to avoid further embarrassment".

Rosenthal had also caused controversy when she said in 2001 that the pardon of Marc Rich was "based on the legal merits."
