GCHE was founded in 1985 by four families whose desire was to instill Christian values in their children. The organization continues to recognize different purposes for which families choose to educate their children at home. All members of the non-denominational group, however, are required to abide by and uphold the group's Code of Conduct and sign their Statement of Faith (a predominantly Protestant theological affirmation). Since that time, as the group has grown, it was decided to keep the large group, but break into smaller, more localized Care Groups. The Care Groups are divided primarily based on zip codes within the county.

Activities hosted and/or sponsored by GCHE include field trips, craft fairs, used book sales, and talent shows. The primary purpose of these and other similar events is to provide opportunities for homeschooled children that they would normally not have without attending a public or private school.
