Geography

Gunupur is located at 19.08°N 83.82°E. It has an average elevation of 83 metres (272.3 ft). It is located in the lap of the Eastern Ghat and on the banks of river Vamshadhara. It has a mixed climate of mountains & Coastal Plain. Its outer region is completely covered by forest.

Transport

Gunupur is connected to other parts of Orissa by the State Highway No.17 which connects Berhampur via Paralakhemundi and Taptapani at one end and Rayagada on the other. The nearest major town is Paralakhemundi(Gajapati Dist) which is 55 km away and Rayagada which is 75 km away. The nearest National Highway (N.H–5) junction is at around 95 km from Gunupur. The nearest operational railway station is Rayagada around 75 km and Palasa, which is 95 km away. There was a narrow gauge railway line (called Naupada-Gunupur Rail line) running through this town. The work of conversion to broad gauge is completed in 2010.(Puri to Gunupur via Naupda )

The nearest Airport is the Visakhapatnam Airport , which is at a distance of 200 km.

Bhimasankar Jyotirlinga

According to "LINGA PURAN", Bhimasankar temple in Bhimpur around 30 KM from Gunupur is one of the Jyotirling, situated at the western part of the holy Mahendragiri mountains and at the river bank of Mahendratanaya(which is also believed as the Daakini area by many historian), was excavated in the year 1974, having quadrangular Shakti around the Linga and decorated by a Upavita as per the puran.

It has an Engineering college Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology managed by the Vidya Bharati Educational Trust. It attracts students not only students from Eastern and North Eastern India but also foreign students from Nepal & Bhutan. The college has 11 B.Tech branches, 6 M.Tech, 6 MSc.courses, MBA & MCA courses.It has also an CBSE pattern English Medium School.

An English medium public school viz Vidyaniketan situated at the lotus feet of Lord Jagannath is catering education to children of nearby areas.

Besides there is another education institute named Gayatri Institute of Computer Management and
Studies (GICMS & GIPS) where BCA,MCA,MBA,B-PHARMA,D-PHARMA courses are included.

Gunupur has also another Polytechnic Institute named BITS to impart diploma education for the students. Apart from this Gunupur College, Gunupur and Thyarama Women's College,Gunupur have got a good reputation under Berhampur University
