ECHS has two educational programs: a Traditional Classroom Program (TCP) akin to traditional high school and an Independent Learning Program (ILP) focused on a more individualized—tutorial based learning format. The school opened in 1996 with only 30 students. Since then, the student population has grown to almost 400 in the traditional classroom program, with over 500 students attending the independent learning program. ECHS presents one of its goals as stressing the importance of "back to basics learning" and the improvement of pupil-faculty intellectual discourse.

Academics

Students must complete and pass the California High School Exit Exam, in addition to a final project and or thesis that is presented to a committee for review.

The curriculum emphasizes American Civilization and United States History.
