The London race was run in nearly ideal weather conditions on Sunday 17 April: BBC news bloggers reported it was "cloudy and cool" at the start, but the temperatures warmed and the race finished (just before noon) in sunshine. After finishing his drink at the 30K aid station, Mutai accelerated and opened a lead of 15 meters. Only four other racers were able to respond, but none could catch Mutai has he covered the next 5 kilometers in a punishingly fast time of 14:16, running miles 21 and 22 in times of 4:29 and 4:32, respectively.
