. The station is unstaffed and has two platforms adjacent to a level crossing
. This crossing is still manually controlled. A signal box
stands across the road from the west bound platform.
The station takes its name from the now abandoned original village of Eccles that was located a mile to the South of the station. The church, Eccles St Mary, still stands and is one of 124 existing round-tower church

. In the 1990s, a new village was built immediately adjacent to the station, and this now bears the names of Eccles. This makes the 'Road' in the station name an anachronism.

In the Afternoon East Midlands Trains operate a 16:14 service to Ely, Peterborough, Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester Piccadilly, Warrington Central, and Liverpool Lime Street on Monday to Fridays . National Express East Anglia operate a 16:03 on Saturday and a 18:03 Monday to Saturdays service to Cambridge.
There is no Sunday service.
A normal Monday to Friday service operates on most Bank Holidays.
