in 1923. Nationalisation followed in 1948 and in 1978 the station became part of the Merseyrail network's Northern Line (operated by British Rail
until privatisation
in 1995). The station recently underwent a revamp at a cost of £250,000 with work on the car park due to start later on in 2009. The refurbishment has included a new toilet with disabled access, changes to the waiting rooms such as automatic doors, CCTV, new flooring, seats, new windows and heating. A new car park will also be developed on the site of the current one and is expected to be completed by the start of 2010. Work is also expected to begin on the park and ride site in the autumn of 2010 which will include new surfacing, marked bays, lighting and landscaping. The refurbishment has also included new paintwork to the underpass and the stairwells. Electronic timetables are also set to be installed on both platforms in July 2009. There is a memorial at this station that quotes some of Allan Cunningham's lyrics from 'a wet sheet and a flowing sea'.
