Curriculum

The curriculum documents are designed to meet the IB Standards and Practices which were reviewed in early 2011 to refine and develop a more user friendly document and to reduce duplication and redundancy. The standards are what a school should know and be able to do to implement an IB

programme. The practices are operational, resulting in an outcome with tangible evidence. The requirements are specific to each programme. When the IB carries out Evaluation Visits they look at the school through the lens of the Standards and Practices and therefore it is crucial that these are reflected in our curriculum documents. There needs to be consistency of commitment to the IB philosophy (its educational beliefs and values) and the practices of the programme, e.g. it must be inquiry based, concept driven and transdisciplinary. We hope that this consistency is evident in our curriculum documents.

In the elementary school it have based curriculum documents on the PYP scope and sequence documents. The purpose of the PYP scope and sequence documents is to provide a tool to inform the school community about teaching and learning in each subject area, especially about the conceptual understanding, skills and knowledge being developed in that subject; to make transparent the essential elements of the PYP in the context of the subject areas; and to clarify the role of the subject areas in a transdisciplinary programme. During parent workshops we explain the emphasis on conceptual understandings and the use of phases to show development.

The PYP acknowledges the vital role of language

in the construction of meaning and emphasises the importance of mother tongue development. The processes involved in language learning represent a series of developmental continuums. Language provides a vehicle for inquiry and wherever possible language should be taught through the relevant, authentic context of the unit of inquiry.
