History

It is learnt from inscriptions that the old name for this town was Bagadige. A legend says that during ancient times this town was gifted to the Vajantries (musicians) by Ravana the king of Lanka who ruled this part. Later, under successive dominions of Vijayanagar emperors, Peshwas, Hyderali of Mysore, Maratha rulers and finally the British in 1818 A.D.

In 1865, the municipality came into existence and civic amenities were provided to the residents of Bagalkot.

Now the Bagalkot is planned as New Bagalkot (Navanagar) because Almatti Dam

Geography

Bagalkot is located at . It has an average elevation of 533 metres (1748 feet). It is situated on the bank of the river Ghataprabha.

Bagalkot District is flanked by Bijapur district in the north and Gadag district in the south. Raichur district lies towards east of Bagalkot and Koppal district towards southeast along with Belgaum district towards west border the same.

Transport

Bagalkot is well connected by road and railway routes. The state highway passing through Bagalkot connects NH-13 at about 40 km from Bagalkot. It is connected to Hubli and Belgaum
