Geography

Avanigadda is located at 16°1'11"N and 80°55'12"E.It's situated on the banks of River Krishna.It's basically in the island named as Diviseema which is also a delta.

Temple

Avanigadda has a famous temple of Sri.Lakshmi Narayana Swamy. It is maintained by the "Potharaju" family members and periodic festivities are organized. It has a 7 storied "gali gopuram" and the temple architecture is ancient and magnificent.This is one of the "PANCHA NARAYANA KSHETRAMS" LOCATED in Andhrapadesh. This temple follows the "VAIKHANASA AGAMA" PUJA VIDHNAM.

1977 November 19

The Bad day of the People of Diviseema which claimed around 20,000 lives because of strong winds and sea waves of 6m length.The following is a short clip form a Nov 23rd, 1977 newspaper article in the US (Galveston Daily News) "... tidal wave that followed washed away 21 villages and left 10,000 persons dead along India's battered southeast coast, officials reported Tuesday. Another 100,000 persons were reported left homeless by the weekend storm the worst to hit eastern India in more than a century. ANDHRA Pradesh State Revenue Minister P. Narasa Reddy said 10,000 bodies had been counted and at least 21 villages were completely washed away in the tidal wave that followed the cyclone. Reddy said the storm dumped up to 10 inches of rain in eight hours in some areas...."

Political Avanigadda


Politics in Avanigadda are always interesting. Starting from 1960s, the Congress Party had the upperhand, but soon with the entry of Telugu Desam (1983) the scenario changed and it came under Telugu Desam (TDP).
It was in 1999 again the congress won, mainly because of division between TDP local Leaders.
