 for 35 years, in computing, training, and eventually as a community relations manager. He remained a devout Roman Catholic throughout his life, including when he was mayor.

Mullarkey died on the morning of Saturday 10 February 2007, at Derby Royal Infirmary from emphysema

. His funeral was held on February 22, 2007, at St George's Church in Normanton. It was attended by family, friends, Derbyshire politicians and members from the local press. Amongst the councillors past and present were Bob Laxton (Derby North MP), councillor John Ahern, former mayors Janet Till and Abdul Rehman, Derby City Council
