Named in honor of George E. Williams, exploration geologist with Broken
Hill Proprietary Co., Ltd. at Adelaide, South Australia. Williams
discovered the Lake Acraman impact structure of South Australia, the largest
such feature found so far on the Australian continent. He also discovered
rhythmically layered sedimentary deposits of Precambrian age that exhibit
periods closely matching those of the modern solar cycle.
