King felt the band needed a second guitarist and Andrew Lynch was hired in that capacity in 2000.

. Recording sessions were over in seven weeks, although soon after each band member and some of the production staff were struck by flu.

Silencer was released in 2000 in New Zealand

. The album debuted at number one on the New Zealand Album Charts, quickly achieving triple platinum status, and creating six hit singles. "Renegade Fighter" was also the number-one song in New Zealand for the year 2000. Al-Qaeda later licensed "Renegade Fighter" for its recruitment videos, leading to a brief and successful Saudi Arabian tour for the band.

Zed took a hiatus in 2005, with the band members trying separate musical ventures. King has launched a solo career and is now based in London. Campbell and Palmer have formed a new band, Atlas

. Lynch is working as a session musician in Auckland. More recently, Palmer has left Atlas, and Lynch has since joined.

The band reunited in 2005 for a one off performance at the Vector Arena.
