Yerevan State Linguistic University "Bryusov" is the successor of Russian Two-year Teacher Training Institute established on February 4, 1935.
In 1936 - The Section of German Language
, and a year later French and English Sections were created and in 1948 reorganized into Departments.
Presently, the YSLU staff consists of 477 members including the instructing staff of 434 members, 189 members are on full-time position, 48 of them hold more than one office, 12 Doctors of Science, 14 Professors, 102 Candidates of Science, and 54 Assistant Professors.
Currently, approximately 1700 students are enrolled in this faculty.
The Faculty trains students in the following fields:

Today, the graduating students of the Department are in demand not only in the labor market in the Republic of Armenia, but outside its limits as well. They work successfully in different spheres, such as, different educational institutions, training and methodological centers, state governing bodies, foreign agencies and international organizations, mass media and others. Choosing Political Science, Area Studies, International Tourism, International Journalism, Psychology or some other specializations to study, the students of the Department at the same time master two foreign languages, thus becoming competent and competitive specialists in the labor market. And this is one of the advantages of the Department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication.
The highly skilled specialists and distinguished pedagogues, who lecture at the Department, successfully carry out their educational, methodological and scientific activities as well. In the course of the study the students of the department have the opportunity not only to attend the lectures of YSLU professors and instructors, but also lectures delivered by managers and officials of different international organizations, ambassadors and by foreign specialists.
In 2004, 1300 students studied at the Department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication, while currently the Department enrolls about 1500 students.

The European Year of Languages, 2001 was a joint initiative of Council of Europe and European Commission to promote multilingualism and a greater languages capability across Europe. Our University was selected as basic events host for organizing the European Year of Languages, 2001.
Since then, the celebration of the European Day of Languages on September 26 has become a tradition in our country.
Since 1998, in cooperation with the Council of Europe the University has been initiating annual international conferences on Language Policy and Linguistic Education.
A most important document on linguistic education “The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, and Assessment” was translated and put into practice by the university academic staff.
Workshops organized by European Center for Modern Languages (Graz, Austria), are regularly held at the University to implement the general and special projects and programs, and to help Foreign Language Teaching professionals link their classroom activities to the Common European Framework of Reference Language levels.
The library resources are regularly updated. In addition to the main library, there are specialized libraries at Chairs.
The new building of the central library has a reading hall, a research hall, a repository, and a computer cluster with Internet and access to open library network through the New ICT system.
The fund of fiction is the richest part containing the best publications of the Armenian, European and Russian classics of the XIX- XX centuries. The literature on linguistics as well as educational literature in English, French, Spanish, German, Czech, Romanian, Bulgarian and Persian is richly presented in the fund. It also encompasses the Library of the World Children Literature, 200 volumes of World Literature, "Britanica", "World Book", "People and Places" ¨ "Great Books of the Western World" encyclopedias, explanatory dictionaries, dictionaries, thesaurus, guides and manuals. For the recent decade the fund was replenished with the addition of new books presented by the accredited Embassies in Armenia as well as donations received from private libraries.
The fund of unique (rare) books, amounting to 2000 units is the special value of the fund. The pearls of human thought and the typological art of the I-XX centuries represent it. It contains a rich collection of pre-revolutionary publications, books and periodicals of those years.
The Council aims to actively participate in the University life and assist in promoting discussion and resolution of urgent issues in the academic process, and in social life of the students.
The Council actively cooperates with the Student Councils of different Universities in Armenia and abroad. The SC organizes graduation ceremonies, publication of the “Polyglot-New” newspaper; round table discussions, intellectual games, conferences, workshops and seminars, etc. YSLU students work as volunteers in various organizations and closely cooperate with YSLU Career Center. The students regularly visit different orphanages in Yerevan and regions, organize different sport, scientific and cultural events.
Presently the Centre is in the stage of formation and establishment. Complicated problems, which the Centre has put forward, require new and special approaches.
The Centre offers cooperation with those organizations and individuals that are interested in it.
In the period of transition to market relations students employment problem became one of the key problems. In contrast to the Soviet Union period, when in conditions of planned economy students employment problem was solved according to the centralized method, nowadays students have to find a job relying on their own efforts, which is rather difficult because of objective and subjective reasons. Unfortunately quite often students graduating from higher educational institutions are occupied in the area, which is not suitable for their higher education. In such confusing conditions of the difficult system of labour market the problem of young specialists guidance, improvement of students competitiveness in labour market becomes the main goal of YSLU Career Centre.
In many countries of the world the great part of leading universities financial means is being created due to students support and university-graduate relations. During its 75-year way YSLU has given a galaxy of more than 50000 highly qualified specialists of Russian,English,French,Italian, Spanish languages,as well as in practical psychology,political science,area studies,etc. It is obvious that in conditions of such a great potential, a new method of working process organization, new approaches and possibilities, formation of qualitative new relations of university-graduate have again become a key problem.
Objectives and Framework of YSLU Career Centre

The goals of the ALUMNI UNION are to promote the educational and scientific programs in YSLU, to support the reestablishment of the graduate-university relations, to discuss the employment issues of YSLU graduates, to exchange information and experience with RA and foreign organizations realizing similar activities, to encourage bright students and young specialists.

- 1962 - Regained its former status and was renamed into Yerevan State Pedagogical University of Russian and Foreign Languages after Valery Brusov. Advanced courses of compulsory public and specialized secondary school teachers’ training functioned at the Institute from 1979 to 1991.
- 1985 - The Institute was awarded the Friendship of Nations Order.
- 1993 - Renamed into Yerevan State Institute of Foreign Languages after Valery Brusov.
- 1999 - The basic lyceum was founded.
- 2001 - In compliance with the RA Government resolution the Institute was granted the status of University and renamed into Yerevan State Linguistic University after Brusov. Throughout the whole period of its functioning the Institute had more than 18000 graduates, specialists of Russian, English, French, German, Greek, Spanish languages, practical psychology, history, political science, area studies, etc. The process of structural changes is still continuing and in the near future they will provide an opportunity to train professionals who meet the new demands of the republic.

Department of Russian language, Literature and Foreign Languages
The Department is the successor of the department of the Russian Language and Literature. As a result of the changes in life demands and with the view to helping the students to find jobs in the future, European languages are taught here alongside with the extensive instruction in the Russian Language and Literature. For the past two years Slavonic languages- Slavonic, Ukrainian, Polish, Serbian have been taught as the 3rd foreign language alongside with the cultural studies of the corresponding nations. It also encompasses the Library of the World Children Literature, 200 volumes of World Literature, "Britanica", "World Book", "People and Places" ¨ "Great Books of the Western World" encyclopedias, explanatory dictionaries, dictionaries, thesaurus, guides and manuals. For the recent decade the fund was replenished with the addition of new books presented by the accredited Embassies in Armenia as well as donations received from private libraries.
The fund of unique (rare) books, amounting to 2000 units is the special value of the fund. The pearls of human thought and the typological art of the I-XX centuries represent it. It contains a rich collection of pre-revolutionary publications, books and periodicals of those years.
Student life
The University students exercise self-governance through the Student Council (established in 1996).The Council aims to actively participate in the University life and assist in promoting discussion and resolution of urgent issues in the academic process, and in social life of the students.
The Council actively cooperates with the Student Councils of different Universities in Armenia and abroad. The SC organizes graduation ceremonies, publication of the “Polyglot-New” newspaper; round table discussions, intellectual games, conferences, workshops and seminars, etc. YSLU students work as volunteers in various organizations and closely cooperate with YSLU Career Center. The students regularly visit different orphanages in Yerevan and regions, organize different sport, scientific and cultural events.
Career and Alumni Centre
YSLU Career Centre was founded on November 3, 2007. The main objectives of the Centre are to improve students and graduates competitiveness in labour market, to establish university-graduate relations, to develop the cooperation between them, to solve the set up problems.Presently the Centre is in the stage of formation and establishment. Complicated problems, which the Centre has put forward, require new and special approaches.
The Centre offers cooperation with those organizations and individuals that are interested in it.
In the period of transition to market relations students employment problem became one of the key problems. In contrast to the Soviet Union period, when in conditions of planned economy students employment problem was solved according to the centralized method, nowadays students have to find a job relying on their own efforts, which is rather difficult because of objective and subjective reasons. Unfortunately quite often students graduating from higher educational institutions are occupied in the area, which is not suitable for their higher education. In such confusing conditions of the difficult system of labour market the problem of young specialists guidance, improvement of students competitiveness in labour market becomes the main goal of YSLU Career Centre.
In many countries of the world the great part of leading universities financial means is being created due to students support and university-graduate relations. During its 75-year way YSLU has given a galaxy of more than 50000 highly qualified specialists of Russian,English,French,Italian, Spanish languages,as well as in practical psychology,political science,area studies,etc. It is obvious that in conditions of such a great potential, a new method of working process organization, new approaches and possibilities, formation of qualitative new relations of university-graduate have again become a key problem.
Objectives and Framework of YSLU Career Centre
The two main target-groups of the Centre are students and graduates. To reach the set up goals the Centre plans to cooperate with the following groups:
- Academic-pedagogical staff
- Different in-University substructures
- Private and state organizations, employers and entrepreneurs
- International organizations, NGOs, and other organizations and individuals that are interested in cooperation process
Main objectives of YSLU Career Centre are
- To systematize activities directed to YSLU students and graduates employment problems
- To organize YSLU students work experience parallel to education process
- To establish close relations between YSLU students, graduates and potential employers
- To carry out research among YSLU students and graduates, to sum up information on both local and international labour market development trends
- To provide consultations on YSLU students and graduates employment and other problems, to organize trainings, seminars and measures, to spread corresponding information
- To establish constant relations and cooperation between graduates and the University, as well as to involve the graduates into YSLU problems solving process
- To establish constant relations between those YSLU graduates who have made a great contribution to the spheres of science, art, culture, social life, etc.
The goals of the ALUMNI UNION are to promote the educational and scientific programs in YSLU, to support the reestablishment of the graduate-university relations, to discuss the employment issues of YSLU graduates, to exchange information and experience with RA and foreign organizations realizing similar activities, to encourage bright students and young specialists.
