Wu Chengying would instead go on to join Shanghai International later on in 2003 for 13,000,000 RMB, which made him the highest Chinese transfer ever in Chinese football history. At Shanghai International he would see them push for the league title on several occasions but would fail at the last hurdle. Nearing the end of his career he was reported to be linked with Hong Kong side South China in 2006 before he virtually retired.
