Qualification Criteria

The challenger to the match will be decided using an eight-player double round-robin tournament

 to be held in later part of the year 2012. The eight players will consist of

Rating List Qualification Spots

According to the FIDE regulations, the loser of the 2012 World Championship will be the #1 seed, and the remainder of the field will be seeded according to their ratings in the January 2012 FIDE rating list. Any replacements will be determined from the average rating of the July 2011 and January 2012 lists.

As of the July 2011 FIDE rating list, the highest three rated players not having already qualified were: (2821) (2805) (2788) (2781) (2770) (2768) (2765) (2764)

In the November 2011 FIDE rating list , the standings changed and the highest three rated players not having already qualified were: (2826) (2802) (2800) (2781) (2768) (2763) (2762) (2758)
while (2733) and (2723) dropped to #18 and #25 on the rating list.

So using the July and November rating lists the 3 players qualifying via ratings will be Carlsen, Aronian and Kramnik.
