History

Wangcheng was formed from a portion of Changsha County

, dividing the Changsha County into 2 counties of Changsha and Wangcheng in 1951, then the two counties were remerged into the Changsha County in 1957, in Dec. 1977. Wangcheng was recreated following reorganization of the administration system which divided the Changsha County.

The name "Wangcheng" originated from the county seat where it was located, Wangcheng Slope , on the west bank of the Xiang River
