History

WXTV first began broadcasting on August 4, 1968, from studios at 641 Main Street in Paterson, New Jersey as an English and Spanish-language television station. Studios later moved to 24 Meadowlands Parkway in Secaucus and are now at 500 Frank W. Burr Boulevard in Teaneck.

In 1970, the station became an all-Spanish language station, affiliated with the Spanish International Network, which became Univision in 1987. Since the mid-1980s, WXTV has used the slogan A su lado, an adaptation for the Hispanic market of the campaign On Your Side created by Frank Gari, and even used the similarly named news music package for a time.

, has held that position since 1972. This gives him the distinction of being the longest-serving news anchor on a New York City television station, English or Spanish.

The 6 and 11 p.m. weekend newscasts tend to be pre-empted by Univision programming that runs longer than it is scheduled to air (which is rare for the primetime schedule, unless a football (soccer) match is airing). It also should be noted, that in the event that there is a technical fault occurring during WXTV's weekday newscasts, WXTV will cut to Univision's west coast feed until they are able to rejoin the east coast feed. If the fault occurred during A Las Seis newscast, WXTV will join the West Coast feed until 6:30 p.m. EDT for Noticiero Univision and if the fault occures during the Solo a Las Once newscast, WXTV will cut to the West Coast feed until 11:30 p.m. EDT for Noticiero Univision: Edicion Nocturna .

On June 22, 2010, WXTV-DT became the first Spanish-language television station in New York to broadcast its local newscasts in high definition.
