In high school, Vernon played at Curtis High School in Staten Island, New York. He broke several records previously held by such standouts as Mike Prezutti, Kenny Dale, Nat Stepany, and Floyd Lark. He then attended Carson-Newman College in Tennessee where he was a standout as a running back.

Vernon also wrote and published his autobiography titled "The Next Level: A Game I Had To Play."
