. It was created on 1 January 2006 from the merger of the municipalities of Autavaux, Forel and Montbrelloz. The administrative seat is in Forel.

Geography

Vernay has an area, , of 8.3 square kilometre. Of this area, 6.2 square kilometre or 74.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.51 square kilometre or 18.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.46 square kilometre or 5.5% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.02 km² (4.9 acre) or 0.2% is either rivers or lakes and 0.16 square kilometre or 1.9% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.7% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.6%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 64.2% is used for growing crops and 7.7% is pastures, while 2.9% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in lakes.
