. The union was founded in early July 1890. The gathered unskilled workers from many different industrial sectors. The key sector of FAV eventually became the chemical industry. As of 1896 FAV had 11,000 members, by 1913 the membership had reached 210,000. In 1922 the union gathered 720,000, but membership later declined. By 1932 FAV had around 350,000 members. FAV published the weekly newspaper Der Proletarier ('The Proletarian').
FAV was initially affiliated with the Free Trade Unions
