History

The school was erected by Bromley School Board and opened in 1891. The Board held an architectural competition in 1888/9 to select a suitable design. The award winning scheme - submitted anonymously under the name 'Kent' was selected in 1889; the competition adjudictor was leading London School Board architect E R Robson (1835–1917).

However, complaints were received that the winning scheme contravened the competition specifications and were prepared by someone employed in Robson's office. The winning scheme was thus disqualified and the remaining submissions revisited by a new adjudicator.

The design submitted under the name 'Bromley' was subsequently approved. It was by Evelyn Arthur Hellicar (1862–1929) and Sydney Vacher (1854–1934). Evelyn Hellicar
