Tim Hagans

Tim Hagans is a jazz
trumpeter and composer.
He has been nominated for Grammys for Best Instrumental Composition for "Box of Cannoli" from 'The Avatar Session (Fuzzy Music 2010); and Best Contemporary Jazz CD for Animation*Imagination (Blue Note 1999) and Re-Animation (Blue Note 2000).
He grew up in Dayton, Ohio
. His early inspirations included Miles Davis
, Freddie Hubbard, Sly Stone
, and Blood, Sweat and Tears. In 1974, Hagans joined the Stan Kenton
band.
In 1977, Hagans left Kenton to join up with Woody Herman, but only for four weeks. He then left for Europe
where he lived in Malmö
, Sweden
, a hotbed of the European jazz scene. While in Europe, he played with Dexter Gordon
, Kenny Drew
, Horace Parlan
, and Thad Jones.
When he came back to the United States, Hagans taught music at the University of Cincinnati
from 1982–84 and the Berklee College of Music
from 1984-87. In 1987, he moved to New York City
. He has worked with saxophonist Bob Belden
on their highly-regarded "Animation/Imagination" project. He was the leader of the Swedish "big band", the Norrbotten Big Band located in Luleå
from 1996 to 2010.
He is a recording artist for Palmetto Records. He currently performs, tours and records with the Tim Hagans Quartet: Tim Hagans, trumpet; Viv Juris, guitar; Rufus Reid, bass, and Jukkis Uotila, drums.
In June 2012, he will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
