In the 1908 Olympics he reached to the semifinals in the 400 metre freestyle and won a silver medal in the 1500 metre freestyle.
Four years later he reached to the semifinals in the 400 metre freestyle and 1500 metre freestyle. He was also a member of British 4×200 metre relay team, which won a bronze medal.
