The Thane Municipal Transport ~ T.M.T (Marathi
: ठाणे महापालिका परिवहन ~ टी. एम. टी.) is the transportation wing of Thane Municipal Corporation, which operates a large number of bus lines in the Thane metropolitan area. These buses are called Thane Municipal Transport or T.M.T bus. TMT bus serves the entire Thane City. It also has operation outside city limits into neighboring Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Mira-Bhayandar.

-Bhayandar. The TMT supplements Suburban Rails, which is the mass carrier on Thane City region. The Internal Places of Thane City which are far from the Thane Station are connected by TMT.

Single Journey Fares are valid only for single trip between any two points. They are issued on paper ticket by the bus conductor. All fare payments must be made in cash. The fare depends on distance of the destination. Single Journey fare are not valid for transfers.

Majority of TMT bus consist of Ordinary route. The few Limited-halt routes that were started in 1999-2000 were phased out and converted to Ordinary routes.
The routes given below are as on 26 August 2010.
As of now, only two routes have been re-introduced as "Limited" :-
Totally there are around 10 round trips per day on each route in the peak hours.
For the very first time, 10 new air conditioned (AC) buses of the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) are added to the fleet. The service will commence from December 4 from the Kopri bus stop.

There are some points where TMT should be looking forward to improve
Although TMT is not so old as compared to BEST but still it is comparatively older Public (Municipal) Transport service than NMMT, KDMT & MBMT.
With introduction of new Buses to its fleets which have been received under JNNURM scheme, TMT proposes to improve its services inside Thane City and also to extend their services to various outer city limits, some routes outside the city limits are Mira Road, Borivali, Konkan Bhavan, Vashi, Sion, Andheri, BKC. TMT also received 10 new Air-condition Tata Marcopolo Buses which plies on Thane-Borivali route that is route no. AC-65 parallel to the BEST buses (700 Ltd & AS 700).
TMT is also planning to start its services to the KDMC & UMC area and to increase its services to BMC,NMMC,MBMC area.

Origins
Thane Municipal Corporation started its own transport service on 9 February 1989, known as TMT ~ Thane Municipal Transport. TMT is the major bus service provider in Thane. TMT has all its bus depots in Thane and numerous bus stops. The Biggest depot is at Wagle Estate.TMT plys its buses inside Thane city and also towards Kalwa & Mumbra.Locations of TMT bus routes plying from Thane to other Municipal Areas.

Formation of TMT Undertaking

The Area of Mira Road was connected to the Thane by the TMT. From various places of Thane it starts its services towards Mira Road Railway Station. The Inter City connection between the Thane City (which is on the Eastern side) & Mira - Bhayandar (which on the Western Side).----
Navi Mumbai
The City of Navi Mumbai is not yet connected by the TMT, except for the border areas like Anand Nagar and Ganapatipada. In future it plans to start its services to Vashi & CBD Belapur.----
Mumbai Suburbs
Predominately the BEST is the largest Public Transport provider in the Mumbai City & Suburb. TMT connects the last station in mumbai suburb Mulund to the various parts of the Thane City. TMT's Air-conditioned Buses connect Borivali (the Western Suburb) with Thane via Ghodhbunder Road, TMT has plans to extend the services to area like Bhandup - Vikroli towards South & also in western side of the Mumbai.----
Kalyan-Dombivali
Like Navi Mumbai, The Cities of Kalyan-Dombivali are not yet connected by the TMT but the inner areas are connected to Thane by the undertaking. TMT is planning to extend its services Kalyan-Dombivali Cities.Fare
The TMT have several different options to pay the fares for the bus. The fares vary depending on the type. Paper Tickets are valid only for single journey. Commuter also have the option to buy monthly and quarterly passes. Student gets discounts on monthly and quarterly passes and senior citizen get discount for weekly, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly passes.Single Journey Fares are valid only for single trip between any two points. Criticism
Thane City is very close to Mumbai, the growth in both the cities have grown rapidly, growth increased population and with that Municipal Corporation tried to improve the infrastructure of the city, but the Public Transport System could not grew with the growing population.There are some points where TMT should be looking forward to improve
- Bad Conditions of Buses with poor Maintenance
- Too many non operational Buses in Depot, TMT has only 2 major Depot.
- Less no. of Buses on road compared to the population of the City.
- Less Longer Routes, main concentration only at Thane Railway Station, as most buses have there starting & destination point at Thane Railway Station.
- Far away places are neglected like Ghodbunder Road. As a result, MSRTC, BEST, MBMT, NMMT and Private Buses provide more frequent and better services.
- No Interconnecting routes available and very few Inter City Bus routes are Active.
- Absence of the Display Board or Route Nos. on the Buses.
- No proper Bus Stops or Bus shelters. Route Nos are not correctly painted on the bus stops. Bus shelters put up at places where there are no routes plying, while at places where it is required, sometimes, there is even no sign of a bus stop.
Although TMT is not so old as compared to BEST but still it is comparatively older Public (Municipal) Transport service than NMMT, KDMT & MBMT.

Improvements & Future Plans
Under "Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM)" TMT shall receive 200 new buses in the existing fleet of buses. TMT has started AC buses from Thane-Borivali and is now planning to start more buses towards Mumbai and other longer destinations. 15 New Low floor Buses with Electronic Display are on road from this April 2010. .With introduction of new Buses to its fleets which have been received under JNNURM scheme, TMT proposes to improve its services inside Thane City and also to extend their services to various outer city limits, some routes outside the city limits are Mira Road, Borivali, Konkan Bhavan, Vashi, Sion, Andheri, BKC. TMT also received 10 new Air-condition Tata Marcopolo Buses which plies on Thane-Borivali route that is route no. AC-65 parallel to the BEST buses (700 Ltd & AS 700).
TMT is also planning to start its services to the KDMC & UMC area and to increase its services to BMC,NMMC,MBMC area.
