He has four children, Mindy, Sean, Fynn and Kate, and two grandchildren, Kyle and Taleigha. He has been married since 1977, to his wife, Meg. His children sometimes appear on Mulligan Stew.

Kate Mulligan is following in her dad's footsteps as an up and coming writer, involved in the media and music scenes. In August 2007 they had an interview together on Canada's CBC Radio One, a show called Sounds like Canada. They discussed an article Kate had published in The Tyee
