. The population was 542 at the 2000 census. South Heights was first known as Ethel's Landing, a docking point on the Ohio River. The name of the town was changed to Shannopin when the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad
established a station there. When the name of the town was changed to South Heights, the station became known as South Heights Station

The racial makeup of the borough was 98.52% White, 0.74% African American, 0.18% Asian, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 239 households out of which 23.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% were married couples
living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% were non-families. 33.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the borough the population was spread out with 20.1% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 33.9% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.0 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $31,023, and the median income for a family was $36,625. Males had a median income of $27,361 versus $21,719 for females. The per capita income
