On 15 December 2000 the remaining section (27 km) was also put into service although 4 stations in central Seoul had not been finished by then (Itaewon - Yaksu). These stations were finally operable on 9 March 2001, which concluded Seoul's ambitious metro expansion programme carried out since 1990.

On 15 December 2000 the remaining section (27 km) was also put into service although 4 stations in central Seoul had not been finished by then (Itaewon - Yaksu). These stations were finally operable on 9 March 2001, which concluded Seoul's ambitious metro expansion programme carried out since 1990. The transfer corridor at Sindang (Line 2) did not open until 3 August 2001.

Line 6 is the only subway system in Seoul to have parts with one-directional lines. Commonly called the Eungam Loop, stations 611 - 615 only have trains going in the counterclockwise direction. Consequently, these stations also have one-sided platforms.

In the future, Line 6 will be extended to the east, in order to enable transfers with the Gyeongchun Line
