In the case of the Makatote Viaduct on the North Island Main Trunk, the iron had to be cast in Christchurch
, then sent by ship to Wanganui
, where it was transhipped to a river boat or barge for the journey up the Whanganui River
. Once the materials reached the nearest accessible stream, they were carted through the dense King Country
jungle by oxen to the construction site. Here final prefabrication was carried out prior to the pieces being raised into position on a cable ropeway. The viaduct is like a giant Meccano
