In 2011 voters in PISD approved of a bond, which includes building a new competitive gymnasium for Rayburn.

. In 2007 PISD recived warnings that if it didn't change Sam Rayburn's mascot they would file copyright charges in a court of law. PISD agreed and forced Sam Rayburn to change its mascot. Yosemite Sam had been Rayburn's mascot for over 43 years. There are no official documents stating the incident but former graduates can remember the change.

. The Sam Rayburn vs. Pasadena rivalry has been going on since Sam Rayburn became the second high school in Pasadena in the early 1960's. It is a tradition every year at Sam Rayburn to beat PHS. They play Pasadena the last game of the season for the pride bowl and have an annual "Burn Baldy" before the game. Sam Rayburn is the champions this year, and are on their 6th consecutive year.

The school is also secondary rivals with Pasadena Memorial High School

. PMHS opened in 2003 and took a lot of Sam Rayburn's territory, including South Houston. Along with that PMHS took students and athletes from Rayburn, Dobie, South Houston, and Deer Park, generally breaking up the old power houses of Pasadena. There is a natural hate between Sam Rayburn and Pasadena Memorial.
