The station is on an underground tunnel, however not a full underground station being in a deep cutting into the tunnel.

The station closed in 1917 however its proximity to the Liverpool Echo Arena

Parts of the station's platforms survive, as do some rooms cut into the rock face, and can still be seen on Northern Line trains heading for Southport
