His parents, Jagadish Chandra Chakraborty and Monica Chakraborty, used to lovingly call him "Benu." In 1975, he passed Higher Secondary Examination from Delhi’s Andrews College. He also earned a degree in B.Sc from the famous Hansraj College of Delhi
